How We Treat?
Possums can be quite beneficial to the environment. However, they have been proven to be more of a problem for homeowners. Many home remedies such as moth balls, molasses, and spices are not guaranteed to work and may not have a lasting effect to keep those possums at bay. Additionally, possums are fur-bearing creatures and there are laws protecting them in the state of Texas. To make sure they are removed from your home legally, you want to call Pest Force to trap and relocate these wild animals. Pest Force will also do exclusionary work if the possum has made its way into your home.

Signs of Possums
Possums are marsupials (yes - like the kangaroos with pouches in Australia) and are about the size of a house cat. They have greyish white fur everywhere except on their ears, feet, and tail. Their tail resembles that of a rat even though the possum is much larger. They are scavengers and will eat a wide-range of foods such as vegetables, pet food, insects, and even roadkill. Possums will hiss, bite, growl, urinate and even defecate as defense mechanisms. Their last resort for self-defense will be to “play possum”. This means they will involuntarily go into a comatose like state and play dead for up to 4 hours. To add to the effect, they will become stiff and start to foam saliva around the mouth. Most notably, they will secrete a foul-smelling odor to ward off predators.

Signs of an infestation could include the following:
-
Exterior damage to siding, gutters, and eaves
-
Disappearing outdoor pet food
-
Indoor stains or strong odor from possum feces
-
Look for possum tracks as they will be more distinct due to their opposable thumb
-
Shuffle and scraping noises

Reasons for Possum Control
Possums have many unique qualities that set them apart from other troublesome critters that can make their way into your yard. They are immune to snake venom and have a low likelihood of contracting rabies due to their low body temperature. However, they are hosts for fleas, ticks, lice and mites which could jump on to your pets and cause infestations of their own. Possums can also spread a number of serious diseases such as tuberculosis, tularemia, and toxoplasmosis. Because they are a large animal, they are more likely to cause extensive indoor and outdoor damage to your home if not removed.
